In a significant move to enhance energy supply, the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (Zeco) has entered into a $17.2 million agreement with Central Electricals International Limited. This initiative aims to bolster the electricity infrastructure in Unguja, specifically targeting improvements in the historic Stone Town area.
Valued at approximately 42.5 billion Tanzanian shillings, this project is set to encompass the establishment of new power substations and a revamped electricity transmission network within Stone Town. During the signing ceremony held on December 23, Zeco's Director General, Haji Haji, expressed that this endeavor is part of a larger strategy to upgrade the overall infrastructure in the region.
Haji elaborated on the project's scope, indicating it will involve the construction of two substations dedicated to receiving and distributing electricity, as well as the introduction of new transmission lines. "This phase of the project, which carries a budget of $17.2 million, will incorporate the building of power substations along with a 33-kilovolt electricity transmission system in Stone Town," he stated.
Currently, the electricity distribution lines in Zanzibar town operate at a capacity of 11 kilovolts. However, this project seeks to enhance that capability, allowing for a more robust 33-kilovolt system within the urban environment.
Additionally, Mr. Joseph Kilangi, the Permanent Secretary for the Zanzibar Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals, emphasized the importance of the contract, which includes rehabilitating and reinforcing the electricity infrastructure throughout the town. He urged ministry officials to closely monitor the contractors to ensure the timely execution of the project.
Kilangi also encouraged the contracted company to deliver high-quality results, noting that successful performance could lead to local firms being considered for future electricity projects, rather than relying solely on foreign companies.
Mr. Hafeez Thawer, the Projects Director at Central Electricals International Limited, reassured the government of their commitment to executing the project to the highest standards. He also mentioned that the involvement of local Zanzibaris would be prioritized during the implementation phases.
This electricity infrastructure enhancement is a vital component of the Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Electricity Access Project (ZESTA), which encompasses the development of solar power facilities and 132-kilovolt transmission lines, aiming to transform the energy landscape in Zanzibar.
