In a recent interview with the BBC, Kelly, a US Democratic Senator from Arizona, revealed he's contemplating a run for the presidency in 2028. The video, released amidst rising questions about the legality of American strikes on narco-trafficking boats off South America, has landed Kelly and five other lawmakers in hot water. They've been targeted by the government, with critics calling it an attack on free speech and a move to punish perceived political enemies.
Kelly, a retired Navy captain and former astronaut, says he's received "many" death threats since Trump accused him of "seditious behavior" over the video. "We get them on a weekly basis now," he told BBC Newsnight. "We had to get security to protect us 24 hours a day."
But Kelly remains undeterred. "This is not going to end by me going away," he said. "I'm going to continue to fight this thing even if it goes all the way to the Supreme Court."
And this is the part most people miss: Kelly believes his unique background sets him apart from other senators. "I'm one of the very few engineers, I'm the only person with a graduate degree in engineering in the United States Senate. I've got combat experience, that's kind of rare. I spent 25 years in the military," he said.
