Microsoft is currently investigating a widespread outage affecting its Microsoft 365 services, including the popular email platform Outlook, Teams, and other essential tools. The issue began on Thursday afternoon, with users reporting difficulties accessing Microsoft applications, and complaints spiking at around 3 p.m. EST, when 16,000 people were unable to access Microsoft 365. Microsoft promptly acknowledged the problem, stating that users may experience degraded service functionality or be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services. By 4:14 p.m. EST, Microsoft claimed to have restored the affected infrastructure to a healthy state, but later posts indicated ongoing efforts to rebalance traffic across all affected infrastructure.
As of late Thursday afternoon, some users were still facing access issues, highlighting the ongoing challenges. One user expressed frustration, stating, 'We cannot even email. This is not fixed.' Others called for compensation from Microsoft, blaming the outage for disrupting their work. It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Microsoft has faced such disruptions. In 2024, a botched update of CrowdStrike antivirus software caused global outages for Microsoft 365 users, impacting various industries, including transportation, healthcare, and finance. The disruptions led to significant consequences, such as thousands of flight delays and cancellations, as well as disruptions in hospital and bank operations worldwide.
