Kurtis Patterson, a former Test cricketer who has faced his share of challenges, recently marked a significant milestone in his career by achieving a remarkable first-class score of 173 not out during his 100th Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales against South Australia. This impressive feat was not just a personal triumph but also a testament to his resilience and determination.
As he entered the second day of play at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Patterson had already amassed a half-century. When the game resumed on Saturday, he continued to add runs steadily, looking poised for a double century until New South Wales declared their innings at 8-440, setting South Australia a daunting target of 446 runs to chase.
Patterson's performance in this match was particularly noteworthy considering that he had only managed to score six runs in his first innings. His second innings was a true turnaround, featuring 14 boundaries and a six over the course of 302 balls, showcasing his ability to dominate the opposition after a challenging start.
However, reaching this milestone carried a bittersweet undertone for Patterson. He expressed a yearning for more opportunities to play at the Test level throughout his career. "It’s quite an interesting feeling, to be honest... I feel really proud," he shared earlier in the week. "As a cricketer, you’re often haunted by the thought of what could have been. I wish there were fewer Shield games in my past, but growing up idolizing this team, playing 100 games is something I never envisioned."
Patterson last participated in a Test match during the summer of 2018-19, where he scored an unbeaten 114 runs against Sri Lanka in Canberra. Sadly, following the return of key players Steve Smith and David Warner from suspension, he found himself out of the squad and has not made a return since. Nevertheless, last year, he reignited discussions about his Test potential with standout performances for Australia A against England Lions and Sri Lanka A.
There was a moment when Patterson contemplated stepping away from cricket entirely after losing his position in the New South Wales XI, describing that period as a "low point" in his career. He admitted that he genuinely believed he might have played his last game for the state team, which made this recent milestone even more meaningful for him.
Despite these challenges, Patterson is focused on regaining his spot in the Test team. Although he struggled during the months of October and November, performances like his latest one against South Australia are sure to put pressure on current number three batsman Marnus Labuschagne. "My reasons for playing have changed, but the ambition to return to Test cricket is very much alive," Patterson stated. "During that low time, I reflected on my motivations. I’ve found joy in other aspects of the game and in embracing the challenges that come my way."
In the match, Patterson was supported by Liam Hatcher, who contributed significantly with four sixes in just four overs, helping to build a more substantial total. Jack Edwards and tailenders Tanveer Sangha also contributed half-centuries, further bolstering New South Wales’ score before South Australia ended the day at 1-61.
