For many travelers exploring Western Australia, the stunning white-sand beaches of the southern coast or the awe-inspiring gorges in the northern regions are typically at the top of their travel itineraries. However, for Bruno Vincent, a gold prospector hailing from the historic French city of Dole—situated 370 kilometers southeast of Paris—the inland town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, located 600 kilometers east of Perth, was his ultimate destination.
Bruno is on a remarkable journey across Australia alongside his daughter, Valentine Vincent, making memories that will last a lifetime. Valentine shared that this trip to the gold city holds significant meaning for her father. "Kalgoorlie is a really important town for him; he was eager to visit it," she explained, highlighting the emotional connection her father has with this locale.
A Unique Approach to Prospecting
Bruno, using Valentine as his translator, recounted how he discovered his passion for gold prospecting at the age of 20. This fascination began when he encountered a man panning for gold in a river. "I approached him and asked, 'What are you doing?' He explained it to me, and we soon became friends," Bruno recalled. This chance meeting ignited a passion that would dominate his life for the next four decades.
In addition to pursuing gold himself, Bruno took his enthusiasm a step further by establishing a prospecting association and organizing holiday camps for children interested in learning the craft. "We wanted to share our love for prospecting with others," he said, expressing his commitment to spreading his knowledge.
Interestingly, the methods of gold prospecting differ significantly between France and Australia. In France, prospectors often rely on visual observation and traditional pans rather than metal detectors. "We primarily use our eyes and our understanding of the terrain; prospecting with a pan is the norm," Bruno explained.
Moreover, he noted a stark contrast in the size and type of gold found in French waters compared to Australian goldfields. While gold in France is often found as tiny particles or dust that have washed down from the Swiss Alps, Bruno lamented, "You rarely find large nuggets there; it's mostly fine powder. Here in Australia, the quantity of gold is astonishing compared to France, where it's often too small to be detected by machines."
This scarcity of gold in France adds to its allure for Bruno. "The rarity and difficulty of finding gold back home make it incredibly valuable to us."
Seeking Local Guidance
Valentine revealed that she had reached out via Facebook to the Kalgoorlie community in hopes of connecting with a local who could show her father the ropes of Australian prospecting. She emphasized that her father wasn't interested in collecting gold but rather wanted to learn the techniques unique to the region. "We were eager to share this experience with a local expert, but unfortunately, that opportunity didn’t materialize," she said.
According to Sarah Shepherd, the operations coordinator at Kalgoorlie Tourism, there has been a noticeable increase in gold tourism in 2025. "With the rise in gold prices, we've seen many more individuals, especially from Europe and Asia, coming here to try prospecting," she observed.
Sarah cautioned that those looking to venture into prospecting should not go alone. "It's crucial to team up with an experienced prospector, bring more water than you think you'll need, and carry an EPIRB for emergency situations," she advised, highlighting the importance of safety in the great outdoors.
Despite not having the chance to prospect, Bruno expressed his delight in experiencing the Goldfields. "Gold represents a dream for every man, and especially for me," he stated, reflecting his lifelong passion.
While Valentine may not have caught her father's enthusiasm for prospecting, she cherishes the time spent together. "He shared this hobby and passion with me during my childhood, and I have wonderful memories of us prospecting by the river," she reminisced. "I'm truly grateful to share this special moment in Kalgoorlie with him, knowing how much it means to him."
