Chelsea's Transfer Woes: A Tale of Exiles and Priorities
In a bold move, Chelsea's new manager, Liam Rosenior, has pledged to address the limbo status of Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi, two players caught in the crossfire of the club's transfer strategy. This comes at a time when Chelsea is navigating a tricky January transfer window, following a managerial change that has left the club with a long to-do list.
Rosenior, a 41-year-old Englishman, has his work cut out for him. After joining mid-season from Strasbourg, which shares ownership with Chelsea, he's tackling a range of tasks. One of his top priorities? Having crucial conversations with Sterling and Disasi, who joined the club during the 2023-24 season for substantial fees but now find themselves training separately from the main squad.
Both players remain on the transfer list, having turned down potential loan moves over the summer. Rosenior acknowledges the need for dialogue, stating, "I have to have a conversation with them. I have to understand their perspective and the club's position. It's an honest assessment of the situation."
But here's where it gets controversial: Chelsea currently has a maximum of six players out on overseas loans, per FIFA's rules, which means they'd need to cancel one of those loans to allow Sterling and Disasi to move on a temporary deal. Interest from Napoli for Sterling and from Roma and Lyon for Disasi adds another layer of complexity.
Chelsea, known for their active transfer windows, has had a slow start to January. Insiders suggest the club's strategy will remain consistent, but Rosenior's voice will now be a key part of the discussion, especially after the unexpected departure of his predecessor, Enzo Maresca.
When asked about potential signings, Rosenior emphasized the importance of assessing the players already at the club, stating, "Normally, you get good surprises if you give people a chance." He cited some positive surprises in the game against Charlton, highlighting the potential within the existing squad.
However, Chelsea is also looking ahead to the summer transfer window, when they expect to make more significant signings. A high-quality attacker is a top priority, as evidenced by their brief pursuit of Antoine Semenyo before he joined Manchester City. The club has also considered moves for Dean Huijsen and is considering additions at center-back, with Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet and Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz among their targets.
And this is the part most people miss: Chelsea is currently under substantial restrictions from UEFA in January to maintain a "positive transfer balance." These restrictions will lift next season, coinciding with the Premier League's introduction of new Squad Cost Control ratio rules, which are less restrictive than the current Profit and Sustainability (PSR) regulations.
Chelsea has already lined up a host of players for next season, including Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, Kairat forward Dastan Satapayev, and Corinthians left-back Denner Evangelista. The Blues have also recently completed a deal to sign defender Deinner Ordonez from Independiente del Valle, who will join in January 2028.
Other players currently on loan, such as Aaron Anselmino at Borussia Dortmund and the Strasbourg trio of Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez, are highly regarded and have played under Rosenior in France.
