The electric vehicle (EV) revolution in the U.S. seems to be hitting a speed bump. At the recent Detroit Auto Show, the excitement around EVs has noticeably dimmed. What was once a dedicated track showcasing the future of American automobiles now shares space with gas-powered and hybrid vehicles. This shift raises crucial questions about the direction of the auto industry and the U.S.'s role in it.
This change isn't happening in a vacuum. The Detroit Auto Show reflects the evolving landscape of the automotive world, as stated by Todd Szott, the event's chairman. But what's driving this shift? The return of former President Donald Trump to the White House and his pro-fossil fuels agenda is a key factor. His administration has rolled back policies supporting EVs, including revoking targets for EV sales and weakening fuel economy standards.
But here's where it gets controversial... While some automakers emphasize "consumer choice," experts are concerned about the long-term implications of this EV pullback, especially as other countries, like China and Europe, aggressively embrace electrification. Michael Robinet from S&P Global Mobility highlighted this concern during an industry trends panel, asking how competitive the U.S. will be on the global stage as the market continues to evolve.
Data backs up these concerns. U.S. sales of electrified cars grew by a mere 1% last year, compared to 17% in China and 33% in Europe. The U.S. market share for pure EVs was just under 8% in 2025, with 1.23 million EVs sold – a slight decrease from 2024.
During a tour of the Ford River Rouge Complex, former President Trump touted policy changes that he believes have boosted U.S. automakers. He has actively worked to dismantle EV-friendly policies, including revoking a Biden-era target for EV sales, blocking EV charging funding, and cutting tax incentives that saved buyers up to $7,500 on an EV purchase. He even eliminated penalties for automakers not meeting fuel economy standards.
And this is the part most people miss... These policy shifts have had a tangible impact. Ford Motor Co. announced a $19.5 billion charge related to electrification efforts and ended production of an all-electric F-150 Lightning truck. General Motors also announced $6 billion in EV-related charges and has scaled back some of its EV commitments. Even Tesla, once a market leader, faced challenges in 2025.
Despite the headwinds, some automakers are still committed to EVs. Shawn Strain, marketing manager at Ford, stated that the company remains "completely committed to EVs," even if the approach is less overt than before. However, industry experts agree that the competitive landscape has changed, with China emerging as a dominant force in the future of the auto industry.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the challenge, stating that China wants to dominate auto manufacturing and is making significant progress globally, except in the U.S. and Canada. Will Roberts, an automotive research lead at Benchmark Minerals, warned that U.S. policy has made all the difference and that American automakers should ensure they are “keeping things ticking along in the background with a really compelling EV offering.”
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg agrees, stating that Trump can't stop electric vehicles from becoming the leading automotive technology, but he can stop America from leading in that technology. The industry should point a different direction.
